On a further note, anyone who can't play online on anymore for WHATEVER reason, little advice - you can play online using a program called GameRanger. You need to try to connect to and get the latest update, even if you can't play on you can still get the patch from them. So don't worry about portforwarding or any of that other crap that people try and throw at it. Diablo 2 has trouble with it's revision ID. You both need that patch in order to join each others games, even if it says you're running the same version, you're not. If you or your friend has tried to get on recently even without success, they were probs forced to download a patch. The problem lies in LoDs version identification. And downloading hamachi is totally pointless cos all it does is tunnel your LAN to another network, which is just a virtual local network, again totally pointless if you own a router. Port forwarding only applies to external requests outside the firewall. Whoever says you need to forward ports for diablo LoD to work on a LAN game is totally wrong and needs to go learn about computers and networking. I signed up to this site just to solve this. When downloading Diablo II from the downloads page you are given version 1.14B but in order to connect to you must have version 1.14D. This may happen after a fresh install of Diablo II due to a version mismatch between the Diablo II client version and server version. We are aware of an issue in Diablo II (2000) affecting multiple gateways (US East, Europe, etc) which can cause an “Unable to identify version” error when connecting to.
